History of Morocco

Course Description

The first part of this course covers the Mediterranean history of Morocco from the origins to the Islamic conquests. The second part positions Morocco in relation to the political history of the Arab-Muslim world through the seven dynasties that ruled Morocco from the end of the eighth century until the arrival of colonialism. The last part covers modern history of Morocco with a focus on the colonial and postcolonial experiences.

This class is not a chronological survey of Moroccan history but rather an exploration of the memory and heritage that construct the identity of contemporary Morocco.

Course Objectives

On completion of this course the students will be able to:

  • understand the Mediterranean heritage of Morocco,
  • position Morocco against the history of the Arab-Muslim World,
  • analyze the impact of colonialism on cotemporary Morocco.
